From Guantanamo to Palau

leave a comment »

This video is not new but I’ve only just been introduced to it thanks to my friendship with folks from Witness Against Torture who, among other things, do advocacy and demonstrations on behalf of Guantanamo detainees.  This segment from a British news show, Dateline, addresses the temporary resettlement in Palau of several Uighur men who had been imprisoned at Guantanamo for the last eight years.  There are interviews with the men, shots of their first opportunity to cook, discussion of the pressure from China that keeps these men from reaching their hoped for destination (Australia), etc.  I found the account is particularly poignant when watched in light of the following  words from an attorney, “These men have never committed any terrorist acts…never had any terrorist training…”

From the lips of Gary Shandling. THOSE Lips?! ewww

I definitely don’t have enough time in the day to scour for reliable news sources and read up on international policies or conflicts.  I do what I can.

Acknowledging my semi-limited resources…..I was still surprised and amused to hear my FIRST accurate observation (on television) of Bin Laden and his attack on 9/11 from Gary Shandling on the Bill Maher show.

“Last night on Bill Maher, the comedian Gary Shandling, of all people, synthesized the connection between our current economic crisis and 9/11 and the Iraq War in a way I have not heard: On 9/11, Al Qaeda had no expectation of a traditional military victory against the United States. The point of the attack was economic — to draw the U.S. into expensive and protracted foreign wars that would deplete our resources and destabilize our government. By invading Iraq, George Bush became the happy idiot to assist Al Qaeda in this goal. Now, Sarah Palin and John McCain take the leaders of Al Qaeda at their word when they say Iraq is the major front in the war on terror. Neither consider the possibility that Al Qaeda wants Iraq to be the major front because it furthers their goal of weakening the U.S. while inflicting minimal damage on their operations.”

The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

He commented on how incredibly successful Bid Laden has been and that that he has WON his war against the U.S.

He spent most of the rest of the show attempting to fondle Christiane Amanpour.

I can’t find a link to the video.

Civilian Death Toll Rises in the “Real” War – Afghanistan

leave a comment »

Over the course of the US Presidential campaign, Obama has asserted that the real war is in Afghanistan. The President elect has called for an increased US military presence in the region.  Tuesday brought yet another grisly example of what a US presence in Afghanistan looks like.  A wedding celebration in the Kandahar province was brought to a gruesome end when a US led air strike slaughtered over 35 celebrants and injured more than two dozen others.  Because of the severity of the injuries inflicted, the death toll is expected to rise.

More details on the air strike can be read at China View.

For information on the August 22nd massacare of possibly as many as 90 Afaghani civillians by US forces see, Eric Schmitt’s Oct. 8th report in the International Herald Tribune.
